Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy, based on the ideal of "here and now," and relationships with others and the world. The objective of this therapy is to help clients to obtain a greater independence in their actions, and the ability to recognize the blockages that prevent them developing naturally. By focusing the individual on their self-awareness as part of present reality, new insights can be made, and they can begin to engage in self-healing. The more personal awareness clients gain, the more empowered they become in their everyday life; the ultimate goal being “contact” - genuine interaction involving the whole person - mind, body, emotions and soul.

Q. What does Gestalt mean?

A. Gestalt is the German noun for whole: A set of elements, such as a person’s thoughts and experiences, considered as a whole, and regarded as amounting to more than the sum of its parts. Gestalt therapy is based on theories that have developed over many years since the 1940s.

Q. How is Gestalt Therapy different from other forms of psychotherapies?

A. Gestalt Therapy is client-directed, in-the-moment. This means that as the client shares what is going on it their lives, the therapist works with how the information is being presented. During the session, the therapist is able to bring client behaviors and concerns into the present, finding the point of origin and reframing a life defining moment(s). Through these sessions with the therapist, many clients go through the process of gaining new and/or increased awareness about themselves, sometimes even experiencing personal "epiphanies". There is no need for hours of therapy to gain client background and family history.

Q. How many sessions will I need to have?

A. As the client and therapist work together, it will become clear when the work is feeling complete. Some clients have had experience of having as many as 3 “aha” (epiphanies) moments in one session.

Q. How long is each session?

A. Sessions are 60 minutes in length.

Q. What is your fee for service?

A. My fee is $90 + $11.70 HST / session.

Q. How will my privacy be protected?

A. All inquiries and sessions are strictly confidential.

Q. Should I consider Gestalt Therapy if I have been part of other types of therapy previously?

A. Yes. If you have had other types of psychotherapy experiences in the past, you will soon become aware that Gestalt Therapists include you in your work towards the self awareness process. You will learn what your own triggers are in-the-moment, and how you are resistant to the undesirable / unsatisfactory behavior(s). You are then equipped to self- identify these triggers in your everyday life and how to better manage them.
